Every service runs the same sequence, and you get told what was found:
With an older heater the real question isn’t “can it be fixed” — it’s “is fixing it worth it.” That gets answered on site: what’s failed, what the part costs, and how much life is left in the rest of the unit. Sometimes it’s a sensor and you keep the heater for years. Sometimes it isn’t.
Replacements are quoted on the day — the unit, the gas run and the site decide it. New installs are typically EvoHeat inverter heat pumps or Raypak gas heaters.

Most pool heater calls are on a unit that was already at the property when you got there. The four that come up most:

Four causes account for most no-start calls:
Diagnosis is the first thing done, not the last — repairs from $225, and you’re told what failed.
What moves the price: the unit, what’s failed, whether parts have to be ordered, and site access. An install is never quoted sight-unseen — the gas run and the position decide most of it. All work is covered by a 12-month workmanship warranty.
The call: pool heater not working. On site, the flue stack sensor was reading the wrong resistance, so the heater was shutting itself down before it could light. Sensor replaced, gas pressures checked and the flame electrode cleaned up. Fired and ran with no issues.
An Astral heater that wouldn’t operate at all. Testing found the pump pressure switch wasn’t making — the heater never registered water flow. Linking it out fired the heater straight up, which confirmed every other component was good and the pressure switch was the only part needed.
Booked as an annual service. Corrosion on the flame electrode was already close to stopping the heater lighting. Cleaned up, gas pressures checked, and the burner chamber and combustion fan cleaned out. Tested, no issues — a fault caught before it became a call-out.
A non-responsive Hayward. Diagnosed a fault in the flue exhaust temperature sensor, supplied and installed a new one, and commissioned the heater.

How often should a pool heater be serviced?
Once a year, before the swim season. From $285.
My pool heater won’t fire up — what causes that?
Usually a flue or exhaust temperature sensor, a corroded flame electrode, a pump pressure switch, or soot in the burner.
Is an older heater worth repairing?
Depends what’s failed. It’s assessed on site before anything is quoted.
